Direct-sow bush beans into a warm, ready container Bed & Balcony · Care observation sheet · 2026-10-25 For labeled bush snap beans in the no-trellis container plan. Pole, lima and fava beans have different growth or temperature requirements. Apply the crop guidance to potting mix using UMD's container-planting method; California and Minnesota calendar dates are not your local planting dates. OBSERVATIONS Bean variety, species and bush habit: ____________________________________________________________ Packet depth, spacing and number allocated: ____________________________________________________________ Frost outlook and local planting reference: ____________________________________________________________ Medium temperature, probe depth and time: ____________________________________________________________ Actual sowing date and seeds used: ____________________________________________________________ Next visit: moisture, emerged count and decision: ____________________________________________________________ CHECKS If the packet says pole bean, runner bean or an uncertain type: Do not use the no-trellis bush-bean allocation. Recover the crop and growth-habit label, then choose a suitable supported plan or obtain correctly identified bush seed. If the container's measured medium is below the packet or local planting recommendation, or frost is forecast: Keep the seeds dry and postpone sowing. A warm afternoon or a phone's air-temperature reading does not establish the temperature around a buried seed. If a bush snap-bean packet, warm medium and suitable frost outlook are confirmed: Mark only the planting positions the container can accommodate at the packet's final spacing. Direct-sow this batch rather than putting extra seeds into every unallocated gap. ACTION CHECKLIST [ ] 1. Measure the place where seeds will sit Use a soil thermometer suited to the container, following its insertion and reading instructions. Record the actual probe depth, location, time and settled temperature. Check again at a cooler part of the day if the first reading came from strong afternoon sun. If your instrument cannot take a reliable reading in this pot, record temperature as unknown and postpone the sowing decision. [ ] 2. Prepare and mark the container Check that drainage openings are clear. Moisten dry potting mix before sowing and leave it loose rather than compressing it. Recover the packet's depth and spacing; UMN's general bean guidance uses about one inch deep, with packet directions taking priority. Mark each position and count the seeds you will actually use. [ ] 3. Sow, water gently and label Place the seeds, cover to the chosen depth and gently water without washing them out. Label the variety, date and number sown. Keep the unused seed dry for a later decision rather than promising a second batch on a fixed calendar. NEXT CHECK At each care visit, feel the medium below the surface before watering and count emerged seedlings against the label. Use the packet's emergence guidance alongside the recorded temperatures. If emergence is missing beyond that context, review the seed and conditions before adding a new batch over the original sowing.
